Most people message us the night before saying they are nervous. By the descent they are planning the next one.
Our leaders plan and verify the route before it is offered, run the safety briefing at the base, set the pace, call the halts, and decide when conditions mean the plan changes. On the trail one leader walks at the front and another sweeps the back, so the group never stretches out of sight.
They also carry the basic first aid kit and the emergency contact list for the route, and they hold the authority to shorten or end a trek. That authority is not negotiable, and it is the single most important safety measure we have.
AURALIS trek leaders provide basic first aid assistance. They are not doctors, nurses or paramedics, and we will never describe them as medically qualified. On remote routes, immediate medical facilities may be hours away.
We take on a small number of new leaders each season. If you know the Sahyadris well and enjoy looking after people more than being first to the top, say hello.
